This is an up to date Optimal Guide for your army. The Guide is mainly a suggestion and should be used PER TOWN (if your town is level 10+) and not just your overall total. Units have been categorized in numerical order of strongest to weakest in each category. It's important to have enough units from each category below to fill a Battlefield (look for units x per block). Lastly, every player's cost allowances are different so do your best to keep your troop numbers as high as you can in each category:
_______________________OPTIMAL TROOP GUIDE_______________________

-Heavy Infantry-

1.-Steam Giants: YES (* most important troop (front line), x10 units per block, minimum 70 to fill Battlefield, multiply by # of towns recommended)
2.-Hoplites: NO (x30 units per block, only useful if Steam Giants have not been researched, or to station at ally's town, minimum 210 to fill Battlefield)
-Light Infantry-

1.-Swordsmen: YES (*used to flank opponent on left and right sides, x30 units per block, minimum 120 to fill Battlefield, can be stationed at ally's towns, multiply by # of towns recommended)
2.-Spearmen: NO (useful sometimes if stationed at ally's towns or for recon missions)
-Long-Range Fighters-

1.-Sulphur Carabineers: YES (*behind Heavy Infantry units, x7 units per block, minimum 49 to fill Battlefield, multiply by # of towns recommended)
2.-Archers: NO (only needed if Sulphur Carabineers have not been researched, then see 1. above for minimums)
3.-Slingers: NO (not needed if Archers or Carabineers are present)
-Artillery-

1.-Mortars: YES (*break down walls and attack other units, x6 units per block, minimum 18 to fill Battlefield, multiply by # of towns recommended)
2.-Catapults: NO (only needed if Mortars have not been researched, then see 1. above for minimums)
3.-Battering Rams: NO (only needed if Catapults have not been researched, then see 1. above for minimums)
-Air Units-

-Gyrocopters: YES (*attacks opponent's Air Units only, x30 units per block, minimum 30 to fill Battlefield, multiply by # of towns recommended)
-Balloon-Bombardiers: YES (*excellent for opponent's Artillery and ground troops, x15 units per block, minimum 15 to fill Battlefield, multiply by # of towns recommended)
-Auxiliary (Support)-

-Cooks: YES (*supports troop morale therefore extending ability to battle, no minimum units per block, recommended minimum at least 30+, note: cooks should almost always be sent along with any troops for battle)
-Doctors: YES (*heals human units, no minimum units per block, recommended minimum at least 30+)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Note: There are some exceptions to having (or sending) the strongest units into a Battle. An example of this is sending Mortars into a Battle with an opponent who has lots of Balloon Bombardiers. In this case you would want to send a lower level Artillery Unit because they are cheaper to build (and therefore expendable), and once all the opponent's Balloons have been destroyed (by your Gyrocopters), then send in your Mortars.

Also: Where you station your troops is up to you. You may keep them at every town or keep them grouped at your MAIN (centralized) town and send them out together to defend a town when they are needed.

If you have any recommendations or suggestions, please let me know so I can keep this Guide up to date.
Cheers!
